The main purpose of a KVM switch is to control multiple CPUs from a single console. A console consists of three main components: Keyboard, Video, and Mouse. A multiple port KVM switch allows a user to easily access any of the connected CPUs via a simple switching action. Depending on the KVM switch model, this can be accomplished by a mechanical pushbutton, a hot-key sequence, or an OSD (on screen display) menu.
- What are the benefits of KVM Switches?
A KVM switch allows multiple sets of keyboards, monitors and mice to be replaced with a single set of control peripherals. Besides the principle cost and power savings of multiple sets of redundant peripherals, the end-user also benefits from increased desktop space, and saves time and physical effort moving between several computers that may be installed in various locations.
Most KVM switches provide automated scan or cycling modes, allowing the operator of the KVM console to monitor processes on multiple computers without having to glance away from the main video display. Additionally, many KVM switches can be setup in a cascaded configuration for future expandability. This allows other (slave) KVM switches to be connected to a master KVM switch.
- In which environement are KVM Switches used?
KVM switches (also known as Server Switches) are ideal for server rooms where computers are less frequently accessed, but occasionally need to be monitored and maintained. KVM switches reduce the number of heat-producing peripherals and provide the most efficient way to control and monitor many server computers.
KVM switches are suitable for any application where a user needs to operate several computers at the same time. Accessory KVM products are available to provide extended cabling distances and console signal conversion. For example, a computer graphics artist could use a KVM switch to operate both PCs and Apple Macintosh computers through a single PC keyboard, monitor, and mouse. A control room operator could remotely switch between multiple computers located throughout a production area. Other applications for KVM switches include helpdesks, classrooms, assembly lines, desktop publishing, farms, etc.
